Graduate School of Economics

The Graduate School of Economics at Osaka Prefecture University offers programs leading to Doctor of Economics, Master of Economics, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Science in Tourism Management degrees.  The doctoral program began in 1959 and aimed at students seeking appointments as researchers in academia. It is now also aimed at those who wish to acquire the knowledge and skills to apply social sciences to a variety of settings in business and the public sector. About 45 new students enroll every spring, including students from abroad.

Since 1994, it has added the two-year Master’s Program and the Doctoral Program for working professionals. Several of the Graduate School of Economics degree programs for working professionals are offered at the Namba satellite classroom located on the 7th floor of the Namba Parks Tower. Starting with the 2013-14 academic year, the school is offering Master of Science in Tourism Management degree for working professionals at the I-site Namba classroom. These satellite classrooms are extensions of the Osaka Prefecture University and you are able to pursue your degree on the evenings or weekends. Take advantage of the flexibility to balance work, school and home life and still benefit from all that our programs have to offer.

Master of Economics
Economics deals with various economic issues, both theoretically and empirically, carries out education and research on the nature of policies that should be adopted, and cultivates researchers and advanced and specialized professionals who can contribute to the global economy and society due to their practical and creative abilities. We research and analyze the appropriate policy responses to a variety of economic issues from both a theoretical and practical approach.
The first year is an intensive introduction to micro and macro economic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. Beyond this, we offer a number of courses in specialized fields of study: Micro-economics, Macro-economics, Statistical Economics, Economic History, History of Economics, Economic Policy, Social Policy, International Economics, Industrial Economic Theory, Public Finance and Financial Theory.

Curriculum

Master of Business Administration
The Master of Business Administration program places importance on education and research into the business administration of organizations including non-profit organizations, centered on complex and rapidly changing corporate activities, and from the various perspectives of business administration, accounting, and law, and cultivates researchers and advanced and specialized professionals who can contribute to the development of the global economy and society due to their practical and creative abilities.
We promote study and research into certain fields from various aspects, such as law, accounting and business administration, with regard to the management of organizations, including non-profit organizations, focusing on business activities within an environment of intense change. There are seven courses within the field of management studies: Management Theory, Labor Management, Marketing Theory, Management Science, Management Information Theory, Financial Accounting Theory and Management Accounting Theory. Within our law program, there are four courses: Public Law, Tax Law, Civil Law and Commercial Law.
The satellite classes do not offer specific courses; they cover the strategic management and law study programs.

Curriculum

Master of Science in Tourism Management
The Tourism Management and Regional Design Program is designed to contribute the dynamic development of tourism and regional renovation in the 21st century. Especially, it focuses on newer trends and tendencies of tourism in various urban areas of Japan to foster the next generations that are capable of creating future tourism business and industries.
This program provides students with the holistic understanding and analytic skills of tourism research from economic, management, and socio-cultural perspectives.

Curriculum

Doctor of Economics
The goal of the three-year degree program is to write a doctoral dissertation, and virtually no graded courses are required, so that students can begin dissertation research at an early stage. We offer five specialized fields of study: economic theory and econometrics, applied economics, business administration, law, and tourism management. Prerequisites for submitting the dissertation varies from field to field. The student’s research is usually perfected through presentations in one of the regularly scheduled workshops, and more extensive revision processes under the supervision of a thesis director. The student is encouraged to submit his or her work to outside journals and conferences in their third year. Students making normal progress complete the doctoral program in three years.

  • In the first year, students must take two courses, Special Seminar IA, IB (2 credits per semester), and Research Seminar Series DI(2 credits).
  • In the second year, students must take two courses, Special Seminar IIA , IIB (2 credits per semester), and Research Seminar Series DII(2 credits).
  • In the third year, students must take two courses, Special Seminar IIIA, IIIB (2 credits per semester), and Research Seminar Series DIII(2 credits).
